Imagine if the power of each of the world’s estimated 650 million PCs were linked to focus on defeating cancer. Millions of personal computers sit idly on desks and in homes worldwide. The IBM Corporation and a group of more than 200 leading foundations, public organizations and academic institutions have joined together to form World Community Grid to make this vision a reality. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers around the globe contribute their unused computer time to accelerate research on humanitarian issues. Join us!

World Community Grid uses grid technology to harness the plentiful, underutilized resource of PCs and laptops worldwide to support humanitarian research. Recently, World Community Grid launched the “Help Defeat Cancer” research project that uses its massive processing power to analyze tissue microarrays (TMA) – a new investigative tool that will ultimately help doctors select proper treatments and provide accurate prognosis for people living with cancer. Researchers expect the project to offer unparalleled insight into which patient populations are most likely to respond to a given treatment regimen, while also providing information needed for future drug design.

World Community Grid is free and easy to join. When idle, a member’s computer will request data, make computations and send its results back to the server. After downloading a small piece of code that runs in the background, you are supporting cancer research while you work, surf, or play at your PC. Windows, Linux or Mac operating systems can all participate.
